The Department of Economics at Christ University believes in active participation of students in voicing their opinions and ideas on various economic subjects. To ensure the same, it provides platform to the students in the form of 'Student Seminar' where in the students can gather information to improve their knowledge and understanding of the discipline and thereby discuss their ideas with friends and teachers.
One such student seminar was conducted on 20th July 2015 at Campus View with the theme 'A Tribute to John Nash'. John Nash was an American mathematician with fundamental contributions in game theory and partial differential equations. He shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics with Reinhard Selten and John Harsanyi for his contribution in the field of game theory. On May 23 2015, John Nash and his wife Alicia were killed in a car collision. This seminar was a way if remembering the works of a beautiful mind of our times.
The panelists and the organizers for the seminar were from the 2nd year
MA Economics. The panellists were Ms. Indu Sukumar, Ms. Anitha, Ms. Jincy
Eapen, Ms. Manisha Kabi and Mr. Rishav Haldar whereas the organisers for the seminar
were Ms. Kruti Nair, Mr. Jerris Sunny and Ms. Gargi Sridharan. To moderate the session we had Prof. Gerard
Rassendren who specializes in Political and Economic History and is a faculty at The Department of Economics, Christ University. The seminar began with Prof. Gerard Rassendren's introductory remarks where he talked about John Nash’s personal life, his
work on algebraic geometry and how he was a mistaken mathematician.
The
first presenter of the session was Ms. Indu Sukumar who talked about John
Nash’s thesis in general, explained Nash’s Equilibrium with the example of
Prisoner’s Dilemma, Multiple Equilibrium and various interpretations of his
theory. The next to present were Ms. Anitha and Ms. Jincy Eapen. They talked on
the applications of Nash’s theory. Ms. Jincy explained the application of the
same through the example of advertisement decisions by two companies and their dominant
strategies. Whereas Ms. Anitha tried to explain the application of the game
theory through the example of the entry decisions by the companies, how the
decision of the two companies depend on each other and how they reach the
equilibrium. Ms. Manisha Kabi and Mr. Rishav Haldar presented on the
limitations of Nash’s theory. The two major limitations that their presentation
focused on were multiple equilibria and rationality. They tried to explain it
through the spotlight problem, matching pennies and Varian’s test.
The
session was taken over by the moderator to give his comments and opinions on
the same. After that, questions were invited by the moderator for further
discussions.
As
a token of appreciation, a memento was presented to Prof. Gerard Rassendren by
Ms. Gargi Sridharan and Mr. Jerris Sunny. Vote of thanks was proposed by Ms.
Gargi Sridharan.
The session was a success and such more seminars are expected by the students and faculty as well. Next seminar is planned to be held in the month of August.
